DOMA , documents and manuscripts collection, contains manuscripts and printed material but it does not include any Towneley museum documents. These are kept separately, mainly in the Library.
Printed documents include the Burnley Council Minutes, exhibition catalogues and guide books
Written documents , mainly for the period up to 1954, cover all aspects of the museum from the day to day work of the caretaker, visitor numbers and visitor group information, income / expenditure of the museum shop, loans and permanent collection records.
They can be divided into three kinds
- day to day diaries and monthly reports with mixed content covering all aspects of the museum, of general historic interest
- object records – inventories, day books and receipt books for object entry and exit
- historic accession registers including retrospective records
In six filing cabinets in the General Office are history files for the collections, artist files for the fine arts collection and background files on members of the Towneley family and on Towneley Hall, mainly related to its use as a museum.
