Provenance: Acquired by museum in 1939 for £1312 with the aid of a grant of £262 from the Art Fund at Christies auction on 19 May 1939 from sale by Rt. Hon. Maurice Herbert Towneley, 3rd Lord O’Hagan, lot 92.

Trivia: Painted in 1782 but following the discovery in 1791 of the discobolus which was then transportation to England 1793, it was added to the painting by Zoffany. This required other statues within the painting to be slightly altered. This was discovered from an x-ray taken at the Courtauld in 1956 (no copy found at Towneley).
